2009 Sonnet Contest
Warm up your quills! The second annual Shakespeare in the Ruins Sonnet Contest is gearing up!
In honor of the Bard's birthday, SIR challenges one and all to do one better. In keeping with our February 20th gala, this year's theme is 'Star Crossed Lovers'.
Simply pen a traditional Shakespearean sonnet and email it into our office at shakespeare@mts.net and take your chance to win two free tickets to the opening night performance of Othello in the spring of 2009.
Entries will be judged by our panel of 'experts' and the winner announced April 24th. The winning sonnet will also be printed on our website for one year and in our Othello program.
Good luck!
2008 Winning Sonnet
Winter Prelude
The quiet land draws in upon itself,
Dull silver under weary autumn skies.
Where cloud herds stream into the distant west,
Their shaggy coats in shreds before the blast.
The naked trees stand forth in serried ranks,
Their barren branches etched against the sky.
And lonely hunters stalk the darkling hills,
Like spectres, silent on their fearsome paths.
Their prey in terror, still on frost-rimmed grass,
In silent witness to the passing horde.
And then, with war band following on behind,
Stern Winter, clad in shimmering, icy mail,
Rides down the northern sky to vanquish all,
His silken banners hearlding in the storm.
